Three weeks in Italy
(10 Sept-02 Oct 2005)

Day 17 (Monday, Sept 26, 2005)

Next morning we arrived early ay Portofino... it could have been better to visit Portfoino at night when it is probably much crowded but it would certainly be very difficult to find a place to park the car... there is just a single parking place in that tiny village...

After Portofino we turned back and before Rapallo we stoped at Santa Margarita for a coffee... after the coffee we walked in the market street and we found a nice pasticceria and bought a Pandolce Genovesse (a sweet cake made with pine nuts)...

Passing through Rapallo again we drove up to Deiva Marina town where we left the car and took the train for Cinque Terre... Cinque terre is now a national park with the five very best preseved Italian villages...

We decided to get off the train at the farthest village called Riomaggiore and then go backwards... we toured the village took a few photos and then we found ıut that there is pathway in the national park called Via del Amore so we bought a ticket and started walking... that pathway connects all the five villages...

The first part which was only 2 kms and the path was on the sea cost was very easy and beautiful... so we reached at Manarola village... we stopped there to drink something and looked at the ceramic shops...

Then there was anothe part of 2 kms which was almost as easy as the first part and took us to the next village called Corniglia... there were some steep stairs just at the entrance of Corniglia so we were tired while climbing them... that was a village high on the rocks while the first two were on the shore...

After Corniglia the path was 4 kms in length to the next village at it was passing through hills and fields... it was very difficult and the weather was the hottest since we arr ved to Italy... at a peak point there was even an SOS station but I am not so sure if there was anyone to hear our call and come to rescue us... so walking hard, climbing up and down, and sweating a lot we finally reached the fourth village called Vernazza...

We asked about the final pathway and they told us that it was 4 kms in length and almost the same in difficulty so we decided to take a boat for the last village called Monterosso...

From Monterosso we took the train back to Deiva Marina to fetch our car... I can say that this was one of the best parts of our tour in Italy... and if we could spare a whole day we could have completed the whole pathway and had more time to rest in each village and even had some wonderful meal...

After we fetched our car from Deiva Marina we shortly arrived at La Spezia where there was plenty of traffic... but we managed to find a comfortable hotel (Jolly Hotel) to rest... La Spezia is a good base to visit Cinque Terre by boat and also Portovenere which is very close... we slept so well that night...
