A trip to Rodos and Simi Islands
(19-25 Sept 2007)

Day 6 - Charaki Beach to Rodos City - The NE Part of Rodos

Next Morning we wake up early and went directly to the beach to swim. The morning as well as the water was wonderful. After our breakfast we started to complete our last day excursion of the island. First we went to see the nearby Feraklos castle but we didn't climb into the castle.

Very shortly we reached Archangelos village, and passing thru it we went down to Stegna beach. This is a wonderful beach and probably has a nice night life because the coast is filled with taverns, cafes, and bars.

After Stegna beach we came to the place called Tsambika beach, a vast sandy beach, but probably very crowded in high season. Nearby there was the Tsambika monastery and we climbed it first with car up to a certain point from a 1.5 km very steep and narrow road, praying not to face someone else coming the opposite direction :-) After we parked we found out that we have to climb some 500 steps or so to reach the monstery. This is actually a very small church that has some extra beautiful views around, looking towards Tsambika beach on one side and Kolymbia and Afantou beach on the other side. This monastery is a pilgrimage place for childless women and on Sept 18th it is the festival day.

After the monastery we reached Kolymbia beach and turnd left inland towards Epta Piges or Seven springs. This is a place within a forest suitable for trekking. There is a nice small cafe just at the entrance of the park where we had a coffee and the seven springs are very close to the building. There is a track starting from the springs leading into the forest, and at the right hand there is a tunnel actually a very narrow undergound water canal to carry the water from the seven springs to the otherside of the hill to a small dam. The tunnel is very narrow slippery and dark, and you have to take off your shoes if you want to walk thru it and have a small adventure. But we walked over the ground instead to the other side hearing the cries of children and ladies comming from the tunnel thru the ventilation openings :)

After Epta Piges we continued our road up the mountains to Eleoussa village and from there to the church of Agios Nikolaos Fountoukli. This place is on the other side Profitis Ilias, where we climbed two days ago to the Elafos and Elafaki Hotel. This is a very old and small church but the nature around is very great.

On our return way we stoped at Ag. Nektarios church which we had spotted earlier and we had some lunch on the nearby tavern. This is a very shady and nice place to have lunch. There are no other buildings except the tavern and the church.

After our lunch we came down to the coast road and we passed thru Afantou beach and after a little while we entered Falkiraki where there is the place called Ladiko or Anthony Queen Bay where many scenes from the noted war film "The Guns of Navarone" were filmed once upon a time :)

From Faliraki we continued to Thermes of Kalitthea that is a derelict Italian-built spa. Within the complex there are crumbling colonnades, domed celings and mosaic floors, but you have to pay to enter it.

After 10 kms of Kallithea you are back to Rodes city. As it was almost evening we went to deliver our rental car and then we wnet to our hotel to rent a room for one night.
