A trip to Rodos and Simi Islands
(19-25 Sept 2007)

Day 4 - Kamiros Skala to Prassonisi - The SW Part of Rodos

Next day after our breakfast we left the hotel and we went to visit the nearby 16th century castle Kastellos which was very close to the beach we swimmed the day before. The castle stands on a rocky hill high from the sea with views to the nearby Halki island.

After we visited the castle we drove to Kritinia village, a lovely and very calm village, with a pine forest at the backyard, and nice views in the front overlooking Kastellos.

After Kritinia we went to see Emponas village, where the best wine and souma of Rodos island is produced. There were a few places selling spirits but we just walked in the streets and took a few photos of the houses and beautiful tavers. The time was still early around ten o'clock in the morning. Leaving Emponas we continued soutwards and very soon we arrived in a place in the pine forest again with lovely views to the Halki island. There was a small caravan sellng wine and souma, and we bought a half liter of souma which is also called tsipouro or raki.

To our right there was mopunt Attaviros the highest of the island. and after a short drive we came to a turn left for the village of Ag.Isidoros. We decided to go there for our morning coffee and we parked in the very narrow square so to say and had a Greek coffee there at a smal traditional kafeneion. What a serene atmosphere !

After the coffe we came back to the main road and after a few kilometers we came to a turn left where there was a sign for Glyfada beach. We took the chance to see the place so we drove thru a narrow road within wine fields down to the sea. That was a pebbled beach with two small buildings probably tavers at each end one of which was not operational at the time. The beach was very deserted probably because of the low season.

Very shortly we arrived at Siana town, famous for its honey, wine and souma also. Here there were plenty of tourist buses, so we joined the crowed and first visited the main church, and after that the nearby winery where we tasted their honey and souma.

Continuing our road we came to a fork and at the left was castle Monolithos. We drove till the small square of the castle where we parked and climbed the stone steps up the hill to visit the castle. We found some very beautiful views and a very small whitewashed church built on top of the castle.

Then we continued our road till Appolakia village. Which was full with cars and tourits as it is very close to the easter coast of the island if you drive inlands. Here we drove inland to see the inner villages Arnitha, Istros, Pofilia, and Vati, and also Ag. Nikolaos very close to Filimonos monastery.

Then we came back to Apolakkia and after a few kilometers we stopped at a tavern on the beach for a bottle coke. The famous Skiadi monastery was within a very short distance. That was a newly restorated monastery with nice frescoes on the walls and teriffic views down the mountain it was built. However the well know icon of Virgin Mary of the monastery was at Rodos town at that time so we couldn't find the chance to see it.

After Skiadi monastery we continued our drive down to our last stop Prassonisi. This was the southern end of the island. a small hill or island connected to the mainland thru a large and vast sandy beach. We tried to swim but there was a strong wind and the flying sand particules were not so pleasant though the weather was great for the surfers. We were planning to stay here in one of the hotels but as it was weekend the place was full with surfers so we couldn't find a room. So we drove back to the main road junction for Katavia village and stayed there. There were a few nice taverns at Katavia village so we chose one and had a nice dinner with plenty of cats around ;)
